Expectations
PARENTS/GUARDIANS
All parents/guardians of BCVS students agree to comply with the statements below in order to assist and support their child in meeting the expectations outlined in this handbook.
PARENTS/GUARDIANS understand that non-compliance could result in a loss of enrollment eligibility for the following semester or school year.
- I will provide all documentation necessary for enrollment in Tennessee schools.
- I will provide access to a reliable computer and printer with a high speed internet connection on a daily basis.
- I will provide a working telephone number to BCVS for immediate communication.
- My child will complete all daily classwork assigned and complete required percentages in each class each day and/or attend the equivalent of 6.5 hours per school day.
- I will regularly monitor my child’s progress through the family login and/or communication with teachers to ensure that he/she is staying focused and progressing academically.
- I will read daily all communication sent from the school or teachers and communicate with my child’s teachers and administrative team regularly.
- My child will be present for all required testing at the time and place designated for such testing (majority of testing is in-person at the Virtual School).
STUDENTS
- Must maintain consistent and regular communication with teachers.
- Must attend all required synchronous Live Lessons.
- Must read daily all communication sent from the school or teachers an communicate with my child’s teachers and administrative team regularly.
- Must complete all daily classwork assigned and complete required percentages in each class each day and/or attend the equivalent of 6.5 hours per school day.
- Must adhere to the Bradley County Schools Student Acceptable Use Policy and follow guidelines for the Student Device Contract .
- Must respond to all teacher and administrative questions within twenty-four (24) hours on regular school days, Monday through Friday. (Teachers are required to respond in the same manner.)
- Communicate appropriately. See the Communication Section, below.
BCVS STAFF
- Complete daily grading of all student work and correspondence within a 24-hour period during scheduled school days.
- Monitor course progress and send a message to the student and/or parent who is behind in their progress and/or grades, encouraging them to move forward when they are 2-3% behind. Staff will send a message to the counselor/ principal of all students who are 3% behind.
- Complete monthly phone calls with parents (and students) of advisory students.
(Middle School & High School)
- Provide targeted Live Lessons via Zoom throughout the week.
PARTICIPATE IN SYNCHRONOUS LESSONS
Students will participate in frequent online live lessons with their teacher and classmates. The purpose of these meetings is to provide instructional support and reinforcement for every BCVS student. The teacher will designate a time for the synchronous instructional time in advance. Students should be on time and adhere to norms for online instruction.
- 6th-8th grade students are expected to attend 1 Math Live Lesson, 1 Reading Live Lesson, and 1 Science/History Live Lesson each week.
- 9th-12th grade students will be required to attend 1 Live Lesson each week for ALL End of Course tested subjects (EOC Courses). Students are highly encouraged to attend Live Lessons for all non-EOC Courses as well.
- Live lessons will last approximately 30 min. There may be additional optional Live Lesson opportunities offered throughout the week.
- Teachers are always available for support throughout the week. Students and parents should be proactive and request assistance if a student needs help. We want you to feel supported!
COMMUNICATION
Most of the communication between our teachers, students and parents is written. It is important to note that the words that we use are choices. Respect the power of those decisions and choose words with care. Email and other communications should always be professional. The following are etiquette expectations for students:
- Always use correct spelling and grammar. Do not use any acronyms associated with social media.
- Provide a brief and concise summary in the subject line of the electronic communication.
- Keep communication brief and to the point.
- Do not discuss multiple subjects. Be sure to focus on one subject per communication.
- Always include a professional greeting and closing.
- Address the contact with the appropriate level of formality.
- Remember that your electronic communication is not private and you are representing yourself and BCVS.
ACADEMIC DRESS
When our students visit the BCVS office, attend meetings, lunch bunch, study sessions, sit for state tests, and/or use interactive visual technology, they are expected to dress in an appropriate manner, conveying an academically professional appearance and image following the Bradley County Schools Dress Code Policy.
